spelling - the Colorado river

Dear Teachers,

I have always thought that when I write "the Colorado River" I start both Colorado and River with capital letters. I have just found "the Colorado river" in a Cambridge course book. Is the other version also correct?

The Colorado River is a specific river. Colorado has other rivers which may be called a Colorado river.

That would be correct if the author was describing a river in Colorado this way, "The Colorado river which has the biggest fish is the Yampa River in the southern part of the state".

If you are talking about the river named, Colorado, then it would be written this way, "The Colorado River starts in the high mountains in the northern part of the state and flows south".

If the Cambridge book was speaking of that one river called the Colorado River and used river instead of River then there was an error in the book.

In that case the text is incorrect. It should be River, not river.
