Tom loves travelling and he is going to start on a new journey next week. (Self-made.)

I’d like to know if the preposition “on” could be omitted in this sentence.

Embark collocates beautifully with on a journey. You could say that he is going to embark on a new journey next week.

On cannot be omitted from that phrase. You cannot embark a journey; you must embark on a journey.
