If I was going to jump the turnstile and ride the subway, would it work to say "I'm going to steal a ride."?

It wouldn't work in BrE. We don't say that we "ride" or "take a ride on" the Tube/underground.

But in this context, "jumping a turnstile" means "to avoid paying the fare".

Was that aimed at the OP or at me? If at me, I'm aware what it means. But the phrase "steal a ride" still doesn't work in BrE, because we don't use the word "ride" at all in connection with the underground.

But what would call it in the expression "steal a/n X on the"? I was unaware that in BrE people don't ride the subway/tube/underground.

The only expression I can think of is "fare dodge". The people who jump over the barriers and avoid paying are "fare dodgers". I should have pointed out that not only do we not use the word "ride" in this context, but we don't use the word "steal" in it either.
