I would like to know the meaning of 'still' below.


The New York Times

BREAKING NEWS

The United States reached a milestone that still has the power to shock: 500,000 Covid-19 deaths.
 
It is used as an adverb to mean "even now".

Yes, just "has" does not say that.
 
Another question: Is "still " [STRIKE]is[/STRIKE] necessary in this sentence?
