Can the phrase "stand someone up" be used in other context apart from meaning not to turn up for a date?

We were to go to the office together but he stood me up(both are just friends). Is it correct?

It works for me.

It doesn't for me.

We were supposed to go to the office together but he stood me up. ([STRIKE]both[/STRIKE] The people concerned are just friends.) Is it correct?

Note my changes above.

It would work for me if "but he stood me up" was said with a little smile and a laugh. That way, it would be clear the speaker was just using it as a turn of phrase, rather than the usual meaning.

At least in AmE it is commonly used to refer to missed meetings or appointments beyond just a date. You probably wouldn't use it in the context of say a medical appointment, but it can be used for many other types of meetings beyond just romantic dates.

The other day another coworker and I were waiting on a third colleague who was supposed to join us for lunch. He never showed up, so we later accused him of standing us up.

I believe the concept featured in the song by Gilbert O'Sullivan Alone Again when the bride failed to appear at the church for her wedding.
