Hi

A certain girl put a transmitter under the seat of a car of a certain police officer.
Her friend and she followed him in their car.

The girl said: That way (because of the transmitter) we can hang back a little just in case he's checking. Does it mean we can stay a little bit behind him in case he was checking if someone was following him?

Her friend replied: He strikes me as a man who checks and often.
As for this one I think it means: The guy seems to be someone who likes checking very often.

Do I read it correctly?

You're right on target with your interpretations.
