I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural.

Suddenly, Anna found found herself in the melée of the police and angry demonstrators and feared for her life.

Suddenly, Anna found herself in the melée, [STRIKE]of the[/STRIKE] with lots of police and angry demonstrators, and feared for her life.
Consider using "started fearing for her life" instead of "feared for her life."

teechar,
I am wondering what preposition is appropriate with the word "melèe".
For example in the following sentences, I am not sure if I should I use "with" or "of".

I found myself in the melèe with the two rival football supporters' groups, which threw bottles at each other.
John bumped into the melèe of demonstrators and had to take another way to get to his home.
I got caught up in the melèe of shoppers rushing to the sales.

You're usually safe using in the melèe. I'm having a hard time thinking of cases where other prepositions would be more appropriate.

jutfrank,

I am wondering about the preposition after "the melèe. Should it be in the melèe "with" or "of"?

Melée (properly "mêlée" in French, but there's no need for the circumflex in English and you can omit the acute accent) usually stands alone, after the description of a brawl.

You can use melee of. That is fine.
