Put that way, he had the terrible feeling he was practically tripping over himself making more mistakes than his father ever did.

Based on the source sentence above, are the followings correct? I think 'did" sounds much more natural to me, but I am wondering if both are correct.

1) You are making many more mistakes recently than you did before.
2) You are making many more mistakes recently than you were before

Here, the word did substitutes for the past simple made.

2) You are making many more mistakes recently than you were before.

Here, were is an ellipsis of were making.
 
To me both seem correct. I have a slight personal preference for 2.
 
2 is better in that it's consistent in its tenses (are making/were making).
 
Of course it depends on the context, right? Thanks for your reply.
