Do the following sentences have the same meaning? What is the difference between them in terms of their usage? Can they be used in the same situations? What extra meaning does the word 'along' add?

Thank you for coming along / Thank you for coming.
 
There's no difference.
 
Thank you for coming along / Thank you for coming.

"Coming along" - You went with the speaker. "Coming" - you went to the speaker.

I have heard people use "coming along" incorrectly. Possibly becoming common usage.
