In this thread, emsr2d2 commented on a member's post.
Note that "dear" is an endearment that should be reserved for close friends and family, or at the start of letters.

Later, another member responsed:
yes, you are absolutely right.I'll be more conscious of my mistakes.Thanks a lot dear Moderator.



Is it appropriate to use 'dear' in the context above? The mod is neither a close friend nor a family member. It is not used in the start of his/her post.

If you want to direct a post to moderators, you can write "Thanks a lot, moderators." If you want to direct it to a specific moderator, use their username.

No. It's not a good way to use dear.

Are you asking whether the advisors you quoted were wrong? No, they weren't wrong.

No. Emsr2d2 is an educated native speaker. I will follow the advice.

I asked this question was because the first fellow forum member used it without any addressing or title, for example, thank you, dear. Then emsr2d2 corrected him/her.

The second fellow forum member used it with a title-- dear + moderator. I was not sure if this structure was okay.

Now I got it.
