Dear all,

In the dialogue below, is it fine for Lucy just to say "Thanks" or "Thank you", instead of "Thanks anyway" or "Thank you anyway"?

Lucy: Mark, can you open this bottle? It's too tight.
Mark: Sure,... Oh, It's really tight. I can't open it either.
Lucy: That's okay. Thanks anyway.

Is "anyway" optional, or necessary?

It's necessary. It means 'Thanks for trying'.
