"Pledged" is the past tense of "pledge". If someone pledged, they promised. For example, "He pledged to quit drinking." "The whole amount realized from, or pledged (promised) by, subscribers to a particular..." If you look in a dictionary you will find that most of the various meanings are related to a promise to do or not do something.

I assume that you took that definition of "subscription" from a dictionary. Did that dictionary not have an entry for "pledge"? You should bookmark Onelook.com and use it to look up any definition you need.

It did, but I just couldn't understand how this word fitted that in the the definition in question.:)
