"Although sound information used to generate a spatial map doesn’t travel down the optic pathway, it shows up in the visual cortex, the part of the brain responsible for processing visual information for visual experience."

Does the underlined part give more detail about the optic pathway or the visual cortex?

Come on, OD, you should be able to work that out. Which seems more likely to you?

"the optic pathway"
Given that the underlined part is separated from the words 'the optic pathway' by the clause 'it shows up in the visual cortex', and that it is separated from the words 'the visual cortex' by only a comma, this seems an almost perverse choice.

This is even more true if you knew, or had looked up in a dictionary, the word 'cortex'.

In this context, I think the meaning of visual cortex is very clear which means I have to choose the visual cortex over the optic pathway. Thank you, 5jj.

If you remove the word "Although" and put a full stop after "pathway", starting a new sentence with "It shows ..." does that help?

Yes, it does.
