The part was correct and our mechanic has just installed it.

Is this sentence correct?

Is there a change in the correctness of the part after it is installed? If not, why use the past tense?

There is no change in the correctness of the spare part. The mechanic has installed it on the machine. And it is running in good condition.

I should write :

The spare part is correct and our mechanic has just installed it on the machine. Now it is running in good condition.

"The part is correct" means this is the right part.
Part no. 3210, bearing is not the correct part. Now this one part no. 3220, bearing is the correct part.

If, for example, there was some doubt/concern about the proper selection of the correct part but investigation confirmed it to be correct, the statement is OK.
