Hello.

Have I used "mirage" correctly and naturally? Is the rest of the sentence okay?

The prospect of going out with her appeared more and more like a mirage. He convinced himself to let her go entirely.

What can I use instead of "prospect"?
 
Yes, but illusion might work also.

The word possibility would work there.
 
Prospect is more of formal. How about chance?

Yes, but that was for a possible replacement for mirage. Not in addition to it.

I know that, but I thought you were expanding by suggesting that sentence. I thought the question mark indicated that you meant "How about using this: ...?"
