"We catch up with the siege train; the fighting elements have already pushed north. ... We drop our prisoners and press north along the military highway... Mule trains of hundreds bring up rations and heavy gear. How far ahead is Coenus? No one knows. Where is Spitamenes? The rear-boggers give us the blank stare."

(The Afghan Campaign by Steven Pressfield)

Hi. I have no idea what it means. I did my dictionary research. The only meaning I found for bogger is a lavatory, toilet. I tried other nuances or usages and found "rear boggers" (Bogger) on the auto forums with the meaning "off-road tires... for mud bogging". But even if I push my imagination so far to imagine the rear tires (in Alexander the Great period) giving the blank stare, for doing this - looking like eyes - they should "look" at me from the lateral sides, it seems.

I did a bit of research on Google and found the following:

"A bogger is a military slang term for a member of the Medical Corps who does a "Boots on the Ground" tour ...".

Look at the third paragraph of THIS blog.

Consequently, I would take the "rear-boggers" to be those members of the Medical Corps at the rear of the siege train. Someone with a military background might be able to shed more light on it.
