This is the conversation (US movie, 1950):

Man (giving her a letter): You recognize this handwriting, don't you?
Woman: So he gave you a letter of introduction. I see.
Woman (looking at the letter): Oh, yes, same old *****, a little more shaky than it used to be.

I hear something that sounds like "straw", "stroll" or "stall".

Do any of them make sense in the context? What does it mean?

Oh, thanks Tarheel. "Scrawl" meaning sloppy, often illegible handwriting makes complete sense to me.
