[Grammar] the US's? Possessive case with abbreviations

Hello,
Could you tell me how to form the possessive case of abbreviations, like the UK, the US etc? Do we just add 's to the abbreviated word? Will it be 'the US's policy' then?

Yes, your possessive form is correct. I'd personally leave out the, though.
 
You can, or you can simply say "US policy."
 
Why the inconsistency then, 'The US's policy' but 'US policy'?
