I don't know what "reckoning" means from the below sentence. Can someone please explain to me? Thanks.

Manhattan Beach was once home to Black beachgoers, but the city ran them out. Now it faces a reckoning.
 
There are two meanings to the word "reckoning". Which one do you think applies to the sentence?
