Is the idiom There´s a good lad still in usage?

I heard it in the movie "71".

You'll still hear it from some people in the UK, applied to either a boy or a dog.

You're unlikely to hear it in the US, because AmE doesn't use 'lad' as form of address.

Even as just a general noun, it's not very common and sounds quaint.

All of the above is true for 'lass' as well.

And it can be used in BrE to be patronising.
