Thought and thinking as a noun

So sometimes it is okay to say either of them interchangeably?

Your question is not very specific. However, here's a sentence in which "thinking" is not a good substitute for "thought":

It was just a thought (not "thinking"), Duncan. I didn’t mean any offence.
 
They are not always interchangeable, as you can see here.
