to change present to past tense?

Hello, Teacher, are both sentence correct? In (2), can I say "are in October..."?


1) I called Dr. John's office to book an appointment and his secretary informed me that his next earliest dates for booking an appointment were in October of this year.

2) I called Dr. John's office to book an appointment and his secretary informed me that his next earliest dates for booking an appointment are in October of this year.
 
Both are aceptable.
