[Idiom] to cut classes

I want to know if this idiom to cut classes means to miss the lessons?
And if you know some synonyms according to this idiom, please, write it.
And Is this really popular idiom in USA?
 
British children bunk off lessons.

It is fairly recent. I didn't know it when I was at school.

Yes, this is commonly used in AmE.
 
Do you say 'cut class' or 'cut classes"?
 
I used to play truant when I was a teen in high school.:roll:
 
People used to skive or skive off when I was at school, not that I ever did you understand. ;-)
