Hi all,

I get the whole point of their conversation but I feel so curious to know the exact meaning of 'fob' as it used differently several times as you can see in the context below:

Dad: Janey! You can't keep fobbing off your child whenever you want to take a break!
Janey: I'm not fobbing him off!
Dad: Well, what would you call three-hour lunches?! Shopping expeditions?! You're just a fobber!
Janey: If I am, I get it from you!
Dad: Don't fob your fobbing off on me!!!

I'd really appreciate it if you explained what it exactly means in this context.

Thanks. So would 'you can't keep fobbing your kid off!' mean something like, 'you can't slope off tricking others into looking after your kid!' in this context?

Yes, that seems to be the meaning.

I don't see any trickery. It's just having someone else assume what should be your responsibility.

I agree, but the statement about 3 hour lunches implied to me that some trickery was involved.

Can you watch my kid? I have a doctor's appointment.

And, is there any difference between the two forms below?

1. He felt he was fobbed off!
2. He felt he was dumped on!

Thanks.

Not much difference. There may a bit less deception in "dumped on".
