[Idiom] To sound like oneself

I've heard the expression "you don't sound like yourself". What does it exactly mean?

Maybe your voice sounded different because of a medical condition.

More context would help.

Or perhaps what you're saying is not the kind of thing we (people who know you quite well) would expect you to say (in a given situation or context)?

In fact the expression must have a figurate sense, as Hedwig suggests, because it was sent as a text (sms). That's why the meaning was confused to me.
