to swill the yard down

In some cases (particularly in highly arid areas), people landscape with rocks and gravel instead of grass to reduce water usage

That is very true in Las Vegas. In addition, the cost of water is so high there that lots of people paint their brown lawns green. I am not joking.

In the UK, it's almost always referred to as "a yard of ale", regardless of whether the glass contains actual ale (in BrE, "ale" is any beer except lager, stout or porter).

I'm proud (?) to say I once drank a yard of Guinness in 56 seconds on a dare. At the time I was proud of the accomplishment, but in my latter years realized what a waste of good beer that was. I was young and dumb(er).

56 seconds- check this guy out:

Not a drop wasted, and it looks like stout.

My brother tried it once and it took him ten minutes.

This reminds me of an absolute unit who shotgunned three Four Lokos (that's twelve whole lokos!).
