That is very true in Las Vegas. In addition, the cost of water is so high there that lots of people paint their brown lawns green. I am not joking.

I originally thought this thread was going to be about swilling down a yard of beer.

For those who don't know, this type of yard is a very tall glass with a spherical bottom so that the beer drinker cannot set it down. I haven't seen one since my undergrad days.

In the UK, it's almost always referred to as "a yard of ale", regardless of whether the glass contains actual ale (in BrE, "ale" is any beer except lager, stout or porter).

I'm proud (?) to say I once drank a yard of Guinness in 56 seconds on a dare. At the time I was proud of the accomplishment, but in my latter years realized what a waste of good beer that was. I was young and dumb(er).
