to thwart

Is the usage of 'to thwart' correct in 'he thwarted her sentiments'.
 
But If I say: 'He thwarted her carnal aspirations by turning down her lascivious sentiments,' it would be perfectly ok.
 
Then, with what can I replace 'thwart'?
