It's commonly used. I don't see a need to mention another thing after it.

I see. But if you said "For one thing" I would expect another thing to be coming afterwards. Then I would patiently (or maybe not so patiently) wait for my turn.

The "other thing" is often left unspoken, generally because the "one thing" is so significant that it's not worth mentioning.
