In my opinion, carpets don't want either; they need cleaning/to be cleaned.
 
Perhaps, a thing wanting another thing is just another BrE thing. :-D
Serioulsy though, I have encountered such usage several times before. Even "Oxford English Dictionaries on-line" says it is possible: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/want?q=+want. However, I am more inclined to trust those who use English in their everyday life.
 
Thank you, Matthew, you may be right but this is how it went in the first post of the thread I was reffering to -- just a quotation, no more no less. What I said afterwards is just my opinion as to how this can be taken or perceived -- nothing about its correctness, if you noticed.

It sounds odd to me, but many BrE constructions do. ;-)
