One shot of the two of them by the side of a football field, post-game, was noteworthy in the obvious distance between the two of them even as they stood side by side, arms around each other.

The character was looking at some photos. I wonder why "in" was used, instead of "of".
 
The best preposition there is 'for'. The writer's choice of 'in' isn't too bad but your choice of 'of' is badly wrong.
 
Does the sentence mean the shot of the obvious distance between the two of them is noteworthy?
 
The shot was noteworthy because it showed the obvious distance between them.
