1) Was Saturday the first of December?
2) Was it Saturday on the first of December?
3) Was Saturday on the first of December?

The first two sentences are OK, but they ask different things.

I'm not sure about it being 100% correct, but to me "Was the first of December a Saturday?" sounds better.

1) Was Saturday the first of December? This would have to refer to the most recent Saturday.
2) Was it Saturday on the first of December? Not natural.
3) Was Saturday on the first of December? Not natural.

My comments are above in red. I agree with charliedeut that "Was the first of December a Saturday?" is a better question if you are trying to work out what day of the week December 1st fell on (though you would need to specify which year).
