This example is from the book ''A Practical English Grammar'' by Thomson. I used the continuous in both situations as I thought they have been arranged. But is it wrong to use the simple present in the first sentence? ''We have breakfast at 8 tomorrow because Tom is catching an early train.''

''We are having breakfast at 8 tomorrow because Tom is catching an early train.''

The simple present can also be used for "scheduled events in the near future".

For planned actions? For example, ''I fly to Paris tomorrow'' is as natural as ''I am flying to Paris tomorrow. Or are you talking about timetables? ''The party starts at 5''. ''The train leaves at 6.''
