Hello,

I am looking for a dramatic way to describe a mountain which is completely green with trees. Can I use "cloak" or maybe "swathe"?

What do you think about these?

There were towering green-swathed mountains.
There towering green-cloaked mountains.

What is your suggestion?

Beginning your sentence with "There were" takes away your intended beauty. Try something like this: "Towering green-swathed mountains rose before me." (or ... rose in the distance.) Get into the habit of avoiding "be" verbs. All they do is weaken your writing.

Honestly, my focus was on the adjective. So, green-swathed is okay and green-cloaked is not?

I guess either one is fine. Personally, I'd just use green. Or spice up the green with something like: the emerald-green mountains. Now we have a shade of color, more visual for the eyes of your audience.

Perhaps:

The slopes are covered by fir trees--the greenness of pine.

Re: what to call green mountains?

lush, verdant mountains

Verdant is good.

alpacinoutd, please note that 'what to call green mountains?' is not a grammatical question.

You can ask 'What can I call green mountains?' or 'How can I describe green mountains?'

I actually prefer green-cloaked, but then we're in very subjective territory.

Green-cloaked and green-swathed are fine. Green is also good.

Lucky's point should help you, too. If you want drama, "There were" will be hard to overcome, no matter what adjectives you use.
