a and c are both possible.

a and c are both possible.

A very basic question, but why is, 'We went shopping and spent much money' not possible? I know that people usually use "a lot of" in positive statements, but I have found in the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English:

Register Much sounds formal in positive statements. In everyday English, people usually say a lot of :
The dress cost a lot of money.
After a lot of thought I said yes.
