Effie Kanyua, spokesperson for the hotel, says the idea for the series of seminars came off the back of research that the hotel commissioned.

I'm confused about this sentence, could you paraphrase it for me?
 
That phrase means "resulted from the work of". The hotel commissioned research that resulted in the idea for a series of seminars.
