What is an "apartman house" in the US English

In BrE an apartment house is a house that has been sub divided into apartments or flats.

"Apartment house" is not common in the US. "Apartment building" is the normal term and it refers usually to a building that was designed and built specifically as separate apartments for rent.
A building that was a single-family house may be later divided into apartments. That might be what is meant, but I am not used to seeing "apartment house."
