Hi:

What dose "house" mean in the following passage? The text is about Ottoman Empire in 4 centuries ago. It is from the book The Asian Trade Revolution of the Seventeenth Century, by Niels Steensgaard, p. 180:

"The year before his visit the customs had brought in 200,000 sequins, which was less than normal, and during his stay the prices in the town were abnormally high, because the Pasha had been obliged to blockade the town in order to drive his predecessor out. Apart from the Consul's house the Venetians still had houses. The value of their annual imports lay between one and IV2 million ducats, and these included 5-6,000 cloths and as much in silks. The French had only five houses in the town, but there were more Frenchmen than Venetians trading in the town because; unlike the latter, they did not live there permanently, but came and went."

Dose it mean "trade house"?

Thanks a million.
