What's the purpose of "the" before "place" ?

Sal says to Deacon:
Sal: They're a bunch of nancies. End of shift, I gotta beg for somebody to grab a beer with. They got no soul, these new guys. They weeded all the heart out of the place.

What's the purpose of "the" before "place" ?

Because it's referring to a specific place - from the context, I assume he's referring to the place where they all work.

"They weeded all the heart out of place" would mean something else entirely (if it meant anything at all).
