"A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year"? In this sentence only the first "A" needs to be capitalised, the second should be lower case.

But when articles capitalized, what are they supposed to convey

Only articles that appear at the beginning of a sentence should be capitalised, except if they are part of a title or proper name which is habitually capitalised. "We are going to see "A Winter's Tale" this evening", for example.
