Hi,

I have a question regarding the word "expiration".

For example, when a term says it expires on August 10, 2011 - does that mean it is still valid on the 10th until the start of August 11th, or is it valid until the end of August 9th?

Appreciate any help, thank you.

Sometimes it can depend upon the context. If it is a term of office for a particular position, the official expiry time will be specified in the charter or contract. For example, when a U.S. President is leaving office, his term officially expires at 12 noon on January 20th.

But traditionally if a guarantee or offer or contract or whatever says "Expires on July 31" or "Expiration date July 31", the offer is valid until 12 midnight on July 31st. By law in the US, unless otherwise specified in the fine print, such an offer is valid until the last second of the actual date listed.

From CBS News Web:
Sell-By Date: Refers to the last day a retailer can display a product for sale; typically a food is safe to eat for 10 days after the Sell-by Date if refrigerated properly.

Use-By Date: Refers to the last day a product will maintain its optimum freshness, flavor, and texture. Beyond this date, the product begins to deteriorate although it is still edible.

Expiration Date: Means what it says - if you haven't used a product by this date, toss it.
