1-I learnt that he had left the country when his mother passed away.
2-I discovered that he was going to hire me after I came out of the meeting.
3-I figured out that she had received a scholarship while staying in England.

Are these sentences ambiguous?

Can one tell whether the adverbial clauses ("when his mother passed away"; "after I came out of the meeting"; "while staying in England") modify the first verbs ("learnt that"; "discovered that"; "figured out that") or the second ones ("gone out of the country"; "was going to hire me"; "had received a scholarship")?

Gratefully,
Navi.

Thank you very much Rover, 5jj and bhaisahab,

Is this one ambiguous as well:

4-We learnt that he had contacted the Russians through unofficial channels.

Gratefully,
Navi.

Thank you again Rover,

One more and then I will stop! I just want to test different types of adverbs.

5-We learnt that he had contacted the Russians secretly.

Actually, to me this one is pretty unambiguous.

Thanks for your patience.

Navi.

Still ambiguous. The only way to remove the ambiguity is to move the word "secretly".
