Hi
I would like to know the differences between the following sentences:
1. Are you going to work?
2. Are you going to go to work?

As it is clear, one of the above sentences have additional "to go"; same goes for the sentence 3 and 4:

3. Are you going to France in September?
4. Are you going to go to France in September?

Which of the above sentences are more common and grammatically preferred?

3. Are you going to France in September?
4. Are you going to go to France in September?
In (3) the speaker is asking if there is some form of arrangement for the person addressed to go to France in September.
In (4) the speaker is asking if there is some form of present evidence of the visit to France in September.

In practice, there is no significant difference in meaning between the two.
