What is a verb for when something is dragged on a surface?

What can I use in this sentence?

The plane slammed onto the road and exploded into a fireball. A piece of metal separated from its wing was catapulted in the air, then fell down and dragged on the surface of the road as sparks flew in all directions.

An object can't be dragged on its own. It was flung out of the plane from the explosion as described and hit the ground with great force causing it to bounce off.

According to the original description, the object was flung up in the air and fell to the ground (which was left out in Rover's post). I think it wouldn't have much momentum left to tear through things along its path as it bounced off.
