What struck me most was that she said it was totally wrong and she had never heard native speakers use it in conversation before.

Perhaps she learned BrE and doesn't converse with Americans very often.

Had I not seen this thread, I would not have realized that some object to "done" being used as a substitute for "finished."

As far as I can see, hardly anyone has 'objected to' this. We speakers of BrE have simply said that we feel that "I am done xxxxing" as an alternative to "I have finished xxxxing" is non-standard - BrE.

Point taken. I meant that I never would have considered it "non-standard" like I know "ain't" is. Or in my dialect when we say things like "the car needs washed."
