The missing Persian cat was found in/on/at XYZ Street.

Which preposition should I use?

Thanks.

Either in or on.

Either in or on.

My notion is that "in" is in this sense used mostly in BrE, while "on" is mostly used in AmE. What do you think?

I agree with you.
I would say "on" the street unless the cat was literally in the middle of the street.

In BrE, we use "on the street" to mean "homeless".

- My uncle was on the street for six months after he lost his job.
- I found this cat in the street. Do you know who owns it?

In
BrE
, we use "on the street" to mean "homeless".

That could mean that here, as well. Though we'd probably say "streets."

Interestingly, that's on the streets in the US.

Yes. that was what I was taught. However, I wonder whether BrE native speakers use the same preposition.

I (BrE) would find a cat in XYZ Street.

I (BrE) would find a cat in XYZ Street.

Unless I found it on a motorway or on a dual carriageway. Even if we used the name of the motorway, it would still be "on".

- I found a puppy on the M25.
- The lost cat was found on the North Circular.

But with proper street names, it's "in".

- I found the puppy in Grantham Road.
- The lost cat was found in Higham Avenue.
