1) I am going to replace Tom for three weeks, while he is in Paris.

Does that mean that Tom is going to be in Paris for three weeks, or does it mean he's going to be in Paris for more than three weeks?
 
I take it to mean Tom is going to be in Paris for three weeks.
 
If Tom is going to Paris for more than three weeks and someone else is replacing him after three weeks, you should have said so.
