Hi all,

Caught in this battlefield, it is easy to claim victimhood and suffocate in the sadness of national ...............

What does it refer to ?

and who ( or what ) was ( or were or is or are ) caught ?

Many thanks

The pronoun "It" refers to the verbs "claim victimhood and suffocate..."
Who was caught?
-generally, you or everyone else even me!

So:

To claim victimhood [...] is easy (for one) when one is caught in this battlefied.

But you've identified a problem with a participle phrase such as 'Caught in this battlefield'. Hearing or reading such a phrase, the recipient automatically tries to relate it to the next subject pronoun. So it's a good idea to avoid this sort of impersonal 'it' in this sort of context. ;-)
