But you've identified a problem with a participle phrase such as 'Caught in this battlefield'. Hearing or reading such a phrase, the recipient automatically tries to relate it to the next subject pronoun. So it's a good idea to avoid this sort of impersonal 'it' in this sort of context. ;-)
