Why We Learn Parts Of Speech

We learn the parts of speech to be able to talk about language.

Hmmm. Why? Now there's a loaded question about any topic! Why do we learn anything?

People learn a language in different ways. Not everyone learns using the standard "verbs/vocabulary/grammar" etc method. Some learn a language by living in a foreign country and genuinely just picking it up as they go along. I know people who speak a foreign language fluently without having any idea what the subjunctive is or how to use the conditional (or even what the conditional is).

However, if you choose to learn a language by attending formal classes then there is a high chance that it will be taught in the standard, rather regimented way and that will probably include the "parts of speech". I imagine that it's because most languages in the world are based around those same 8 integral parts.

Many native speakers don't.

You can learn them, but remember they are only a guide. Many words can be used to fit or play various roles. I get tired of people saying things like "You can't use that word in that way because its a noun".

So, stay open-minded and observe the way words are used, i.e. the roles they play, in real usage.
