With crimes other similar crimes

When talking about crimes commited by teenagers are the following sentences grammatically correct? I don't think my use of "other such crimes" is correct. I think it should be "or other similar crimes." "With crimes" is probably wrong too.

In case of shoplifting or other such serious crimes punishment provided by the court of law is vital. While with crimes as severe as assault it is also required and the police is usually informed.
 
I don't think I would use "provided" with "punishment". Also, I am unclear what "it refers to in the following. (See below.)

I mean the punishment. Can I use new version of the original sentence? I changed it a little.

With crimes as severe as assault punishment is always required.
Can I use "assault" and "punishment" without an article?

See above.

1. Shoplifting is rarely seen as a "serious" crime. It's certainly not as serious as assault.
2. The last few words don't make much sense. Before someone can be punished by a court of law, the police would have already been involved.
