1. You cannot only eat delicious food for free but also make foreign friends.

2. You can not only eat delicious food for free but also make foreign friends.


Sentence 2 is from my grammar book and I became wondered if we can write like 1

since we don't split 'can' and 'not' in writing.


Please enlighten me. :oops:

No, you can't.
 
OED has a nice little explanation of this (and an example very similar to yours).
 
And a sentence like that is a great example of one that should be rewritten. Not only can you...
